The Google Calendar side panel adds the Google Maps add-on

The side panel in Google Workspace apps provides quick access to Calendar, Keep, Tasks and, most recently, Language. Google Calendar on the web now offers an add-on for Google Maps.

The icon for Google Maps appears under “Keep” and “Tasks” on calendar.google.com. Tapping loads a search box, a map view, and two tabs for “Recent” and “Saved”. This first tab is filled with queries from your other signed-in devices, while the second tab allows you to browse collections / lists.

If you tap the field above, three categories are suggested: Grocery, Takeout and Hotel. The search in this add-on is identical to that of the full app.

Once you’ve selected a location, you’ll see it on the map, while the bottom half contains a carousel of images and several shortcuts: Directions, Save, Send to Your Phone, and Copy Link. You can open the full list to see hours, phone number, ratings, and “People are also looking for”.

In the meantime, the directions feature offers the full experience with all the routes shown as well as alternative travel modes. You can always open the current screen in maps.google.com to get a larger view.

The Google Maps add-on in the calendar is very well made and has all the functions. Most users can do whatever they need with this compact experience. It’s quick and saves time. The side panel is Google’s first investigation into allowing users to access other apps on one screen.

It’s showing up in several personal Google accounts this afternoon, but not in Google Workspace.
